The Omega Point And The Next Frontier

by Judith Rich on July 2, 2009

Years ago, I read a fascinating book by Peter Russell, Waking Up In Time:  Finding Peace in Times of Accelerating Change. This book has become my Bible. Based on the title, you’d think it was written recently.  It was first published in 1992, yet enormously prophetic for the exact time we’re experiencing today.  Here’s the opening paragraph:

We are not slouching towards Bethlehem, as Yeats concludes in his poem The Second Coming.  We are being catapulted there.  Bethlehem, or wherever– we’re headed there faster and faster.  However you look at it, the sense that humanity is now facing its evolutionary moment of truth is almost tangible.  We are living through the most exciting, challenging, and critical times in human history — possibly the most critical time in the history of life on Earth.  Never before has so much been possible; never before has so much been at stake.  And never before has the rate of change been so fast.  We are being led ever more rapidly toward what I have called a “white hole in time.”

“White Hole in Time” is the term Russell uses to describe what French priest and paleontologist Teilhard de Chardin called “The Omega Point”, the end of evolution.   Chardin is not suggesting this is the end of the world, but instead it represents the end of the world as we know it.  The Omega Point represents the end of evolutionary change and a breaking free from the dysfunctional attitudes and behaviors that have kept us attached to the world of the past.

To understand Russell’s view of the future,  consider his “evolutionary Cliff Notes” :

Big Bang- approximately 12 billion years ago (give or take a couple of billion years)

Simple life forms- 4 billion years ago

Multicellular life- 1 billion years ago

Complex nervous systems – several hundred million years ago

Mammals- tens of millions of years ago

Appearance of genus Homo– 2 million years ago

Homo sapiens sapiens- tens of thousands of years ago

Civilization- several thousand years ago

Industrial Revolution- a couple hundred years ago

Information Revolution- a few decades ago

You can see that the intervals between major evolutionary leaps get shorter and shorter.  Each new development occurred between one-quarter and one-tenth the time as the previous one.  With the Information Age well in progress, we can see how rapidly new technologies have come into mainstream usage.  With the speed of computer chips doubling roughly every 18 months, we are rapidly approaching the moment where change intervals decrease to zero and the rate of change becomes infinite.  This is a point where mathematical equations break down and no longer have any meaning.

American philosopher of science, Terrence McKenna, has developed a fractal mathematical function that, he claims, charts the overall rate of change.  He calls this a “timewave”.  He has charted repeated historical patterns of novelty and projected these patterns into the future.  The pattern comes to an end on December 21, 2012.  This is the point he calls “Time Wave Zero”, where cycles of change are compressed from years to months to weeks to days to moments.

December 21, 2012, also corresponds to the end of the Mayan calendar.  Spiritual traditions have pointed to this time as the “ending time”.  Some have interpreted it as the end of the world.  This is the moment Chardin calls The Omega Point, the end point.

I am neither mathematician nor scientist.  But I have a body, a mind, and a keen sense of awareness.  It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to comprehend that our current system is broken beyond repair, that we are in an extended state of collapse, and that the old ways will no longer serve us.  This much is clear.  What will happen, how we’ll navigate this time, where we’ll take it, who we’ll become as a species, what will happen to the planet, will we be able to save it and ourselves in time…… all that is yet to be determined.

What will it take for humanity to survive moving forward?  Nothing short of a complete transformation of consciousness.  This, says Russell, is the next frontier.  We are about to enter the Consciousness Age, or the Age of Transformation.  The Omega Point represents the moment in time when a shift in consciousness occurs.  This will be a collective event.  Chardin describes it as the moment when spirit fully descends into matter and a “blaze of light would streak across the planet”.  This is not a physical light, it’s the light of consciousness.   The Omega Point is the moment when the last human being awakens and humanity as a whole has shifted.

Whether or not December 21, 2012 is the exact date for this event to occur is beyond anyone’s knowledge.  I just know my calendar is marked and I’ll be present for the festivities .  Between now and then, it’s fasten your seat belts time, hold on to your hats, and don’t be attached to how things look.  Life has become more and more unpredictable and it’s only going to intensify.

What can one do in the face of such massive change?  I’d say this calls for nothing short of an inner transformation.  The invitation of these times is to awaken to our inner truths and develop to our full spiritual potential.  As Buckminster Fuller put it, “We are facing our final evolutionary exam”.  Can we develop the consciousness that will allow us to use our powers with wisdom? This is the work at hand.   Each of us is charged with doing the work on behalf of ourselves and one another.  We literally are all in this together. We will evolve and learn to thrive in this new age of consciousness or we will fall short and not make the leap.

We’re already beginning to see system collapse.  Wall St. and the banking systems come most readily to mind, but our foreign policy, healthcare system, the economy, use of energy resources; all are at the breaking point and in need of major transformation in order to meet the needs of the future.

It takes courage to be a human being on planet Earth today.  We face enormous challenges.  Will you step up to the task ahead or leave it to someone else to do the work?

I was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 months ago and am about to have surgery next week.  I expect a full recovery, with a couple of weeks downtime post op.  I’ll probably not be posting during the next two weeks, but I expect to be back with more energy and passion than ever, for life, for my life, for the people I love, and for the awakening of human consciousness and global transformation.

Happy 4th of July!  Now go be fabulous!

Thank you, Diogenes. I much appreciate your good thoughts and wishes. My friends tell me I’m too spunky to let this stop me. I feel it will only empower me to be more present to the gift of life.

I am optimistic about the future of humanity and I am sure it is full of surprises.
Please check this website which were made only to discuss our future and what we are evoloving into.

Dear Futurist,
Thanks for your comment and the web site reference. Looks like a good source. I’ll be checking it out.
Best to you,

I think 2012 will be a very interesting year. SO many people are pointing to this date from past that something has to happen on this date.

Hi Judith:

Thank you for being a voice leading us all to a deeper knowing of ourselves. I expect you didn’t create this site for the purpose of receiving accolades, but I want you to know how much your gift is appreciated.

Here are my thoughts about where our planet is and could be heded:
So many of the social structures, systems, and institutions that people have relied on for security for so many years are no longer sound. What is being called forth and called upon for all of us is a trust in that aspect of us that is greater than form–a trust and faith in Spirit–a faith in ourSelves to prevail in such a way that quality of life is available for all. I see the changes we are facing not so much as a breaking down, but rather as a way of being with life that has run its course, served its purpose in our collective awakening process. If we take the view that what seems to be “out there” (i.e. health care system, economic system, etc.) is not “out there” at all, but rather a manifestation of our internal consciousness, we can begin to see all the insidious ways that we have lived from scarcity and separation. I have just started studying _A Course in Miracles_ seriously this year. According to that work and the work of many wisdom teachers, scarcity and separation are illusions. Yet, we have lived as if they are real, and our very institutions and systems have embodied those conditions. The way I see it, we are now coming to terms. The way we have been living is so “in our face” that we can’t deny it. The question is: Will we use the conditions of our world as a mirror reflecting back to us our own consciousness? Or will we tell ourselves that the circumstances of the world are of someone else’s creation, therein bringing forth once again scarcity and separation? In coming to terms responsibly, a new relatedness with all of life becomes possible. The opportunity is before us to experience our innate and unalterable (at the level of Spirit) connection with one another and with all of life. The opportunity is to recognize that each thought we have, and each action we take has a real impact on the whole. It will take courage, indeed. And rigor. We’re being called upon to set up our lives and social structures in such a way that we have time to meditate, reflect, be conscious, and call forth connection. And it will take faith in a quality of life that maybe we can’t quite see or touch or grasp, but is well within reach. The kind of faith our forefathers and foremothers walked in when they declared freedom without a shred of evidence that freedom could be. July 4th is a beautiful time to reflect on the innate power of the human Spirit to prevail.

Blessings to you as you take on your surgery with grace, rigor, and faith. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Yay! I look forward to the transformation. What is clear to me in all this upheaval is that responsibility has been missing. Not only from the banks, the government (in many ways “them”), but it’s been missing within our society as a whole, our culture, our human nature, our being. Change is inevitable, and imperative for our existence. The way the Earth is changing is proof. I don’t know what the change looks like exactly, but I’m ready to dance along with it!

Sending you tons of love and healing light! I love you!

Hi, Judith.
This if fascinating to me. I’d not heard it before. I love the idea of a point at which spirit fully descends into matter and a blaze of light streaks across the planet.
I am very close to a woman who recently finished the chemo that followed her breast cancer surgery. She is amazing – positive and energetic, and determined to use her journey to educate and support others going through it. I have faith that you will, as you say, come back with even more energy and determination to achieve your dreams.
You go girl!

I have confidence that the generation coming of age in this early part of this century (& millenium) are bringing a force for positive change to our future. Their intuitive use of information & technology allows them to cut through many of the old mazes of both cynicism & dogma.

Best wishes to you for your strong recovery & continued good health. I’ll be sending healing energies your way during this recovery period.

Dr. Rich,
It has been months since I have visited these lovely pages and what do I find first? This article that may be the explanation to what I have been experiencing for the past month or so. To my family and friends I describe it as a quickening.
My journey began nearly twenty years ago with an awakening of sorts. Since then there has been a lot of discovery and work. Most recently, it seems as if the last barrier has been reached and a major change has occured within me. The self doubt and anxiety have wafted away. Old demons have withered. The result has been a major burst of creativity like I have never known. At first I was like someone that had been suffering a major headache, afraid to move for fear of the pain coming back. As the days have streamed by, my efforts to express myself creatively have grown and are more complete than I have ever known. It is as if I have broken through a thirty year old writers block. For the first time in my life I have had songs come to me that wrote themselves. I merely played along as the lyrics were revealed.
The universe has gifted me with a synchronicity over the past five years that has shown me the way. As I have made better decisions based in love rather than need, the gifts and learning have grown exponentially. It IS an amazing time to be alive.
The greatest gift to recieve is the gift of love. Not just knowing the word or its principles, but feeling it and giving it freely without expectation. There is no mathmatical equation for it and despite the millions of words written trying to describe it, true expression of it comes from the soul. It is the melody of life.
I procede with confidence knowing that this life is not so much about my needs as it is about letting go and giving to others. The rewards will take care of themselves.

Thank you for your loving examples.
